Staying Secure While on Facebook: 5 Settings to Check

Spend a few minutes covering these bases, and you should have a safe and secure 2013 on the No. 1 social network.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Jesus told His followers . . . "Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves." (Matt.10:16) I personally am glad there are many Believers who have Facebook pages, sharing hope and prayer online. However, online social networks can sometimes feel like you're in the "midst of wolves." In the interest of being "wise as serpents" as Jesus admonished, here is some wisdom from Kim Komando. -Aimee Herd, BCN.

With an ever-increasing number of users, there are subsequently a greater number of threats to the security of what is shared on the medium.

Recently, techie-guru Kim Komando shared about the "5 Facebook privacy settings you need to check now," in a USA Today article.

Komando's suggestions include instructions for using the new tools made available by Facebook which help the user to simplify their privacy settings and become more secure.

Chicago Pastor Running Coast to Coast for Water

John Yeager - World Vision

Spear will run 3200 miles, averaging a marathon a day for 5 months to help kids in Kenya get clean water.

(Seattle, WA)—Right now, 49 year-old Steve Spear is training for the run of his life. The Chicago-area pastor recently quit his job as a Willow Creek pastor after 15 years, to focus on raising $1.5 million to provide clean water for 30,000 people living in Kenya. It's the adventure of a lifetime, a cross-country fundraising run from Southern California to New York City. Spear, who only took up long-distance running five years ago, has completed countless marathons and ultra-marathons but has never done anything like this before. He will attempt to run a marathon a day for five months, from coast to coast.

Spear will start his quest on April 8th, 2013 from the Santa Monica Pier on the Pacific Ocean, finishing up five months later in August in New York City. Steve Spear says his former senior pastor at Willow Creek, Bill Hybels is planning to run with Steve on the final leg of the cross-country odyssey into New York City. Spear will seek support from churches along the way.

A CROSS-COUNTRY ADVENTURE

• Spear will run 3200 miles, averaging a marathon a day for 5 months

• He will consume 6100 calories a day.

Training Camp of Love

HOUSTON, Jan. 31, 2013 - Nestled in the beautiful countryside of Spain is an Arab training camp. Not the kind of camp you have recently heard of coming out of the Arab world, but a training camp that empowers Arab Christian nationals, equipping them with the mighty Word of God.

"It is more like a school than a camp," explained 'Stephen,' the Director of Training. "Over 100 students come here annually from all over the Arab world for intensive training in Church planting and evangelism."

For the past two years, the Digital Bible Society has been providing this facility with audio Bibles, as well as hundreds of hours of gospel films and videos -- all in the Arabic language of the students and loaded as data files onto an SD Microchip. This SD Microchip, which is about the size of your thumb nail, is the ideal ministry tool for these students to bring God's Word back to their respected countries where the Bible is often outlawed and church planting and evangelism are forbidden.

Each microchip has all the material essential for Church growth. There are faith-building lessons for new believers, discipling, Pastors, spiritual leaders, evangelism, missionaries and church planters. The SD Microchip can be used on all electronic devices, including laptops, tablet computers or Smartphones.

"Providing Christian content on SD Microchips in Arabic is only part of the solution," remarked Ken Allen, President of the Digital Bible Society. "These students are in need of laptops, pocket projectors and tablet computers. The Digital Bible Society is preparing to supply each student with these much needed tools to take back with them for Gospel presentations and discipleship."

There are over 160 million Arabs living in the Middle East and North Africa, representing one of the largest unreached groups in the world. The Spirit of God is stirring millions of hearts to faith in Christ in these lands -- often through visions and dreams, and now thousands of underground house churches are emerging.

Do you want to be a part of sharing Christ's plan of salvation with the millions who have never met Him? Will you help us equip this next generation of brave mission pastors with the powerful tools of God's Word? To learn more, contact us at Digital Bible Society. YOU can be a part of this great move of God that is, as the prophet Isaiah foretold, now taking His light to those who walk in darkness.

Digital Bible Society Mission
The mission of the Digital Bible Society is to produce and distribute Bibles and Biblical materials in digital format, especially for regions and cultures where the message of the Gospel of Christ is not readily available.

We purpose to assist in the worldwide distribution of digital Christian media that every believer in every nation will have free access to explore and understand the Scriptures in their own language - whether through the printed page, the spoken word (audio), or visual presentation (video).

Islam Dominates List of Top Persecutors

By Joseph DeCaro

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Eight of the top 10 persecutors of Christians worldwide are Islamic states, according to the Open Doors’ 2013 World Watch List.

Islamic extremism is the prime persecutor of Christians in the world today, and Islamic extremists, either in government, or in violent opposition to that government, are the sources of that persecution, said Ron Boyd-MacMillan, chief strategy officer for Open Doors.

In fact, the uprisings in North Africa and the Middle East that began nearly two years ago have resulted in an even greater persecution of Christians.

“The Arab Spring has turned into an Islamic Winter for the Christians in the Middle East,” said Boyd-MacMillan. “In every country where a regime has been deposed — such as Tunisia, Libya, Morocco and Egypt — Islam is still in power and putting pressure on the Christian minority.”

Saudi Arabia was the worst persecutor second only to North Korea, which practices a cult-like worship of the ruling Kim family, according to Boyd-MacMillan. North Korea imprisons from 50,000 to 70,000 of its 200,000 to 400,000 Christians in labor camps.

Mali, formerly a model country, leapt into the top 10 persecutors after a March coup imposed Shari'a, resulting in a mass exodus of Christians.

“Persecution usually occurs because the church is a genuine threat to evil,” said Boyd-MacMillan. “Jesus said, ‘Love your enemies’; He didn’t say, ‘Don’t make any.’ And all over the world, millions of nameless Christians are standing up and making an enemy of unjust ideologies … without this tidal wave of loving defiance, the world would be an awful place. And from this loving defiance, growth comes and hope stays strong.”

The rankings compiled by Open Doors since 1991 are based on the degrees of restrictions in private life, family life, community life, congregational life and national life. In addition, the U.S. State Department compiles a list of the world’s most severe violators of religious freedom; its most egregious “countries of particular concern” include Burma, China, Eritrea, Iran, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Uzbekistan.

Visitation rights curtailed for Chinese Christian Convert

By Joseph DeCaro, Worthy News Correspondent

BEIJING, CHINA– Visitation rights for the family of a prominent Chinese house church leader incarcerated in Xinjiang have been severely curtailed, according to International Christian Concern.

Last week, Chinese prison authorities informed Alimujiang Yimiti's wife that she and her children would only be allowed to visit her husband for 10 minutes once every three months in lieu of their 20 minute monthly visit.

"The new restrictions on family visits to Alimujiang announced by Chinese authorities last week are simply one more indicator of how little Chinese officials truly respect the rule of law," said Ryan Morgan, ICC's Regional Manager for Southeast Asia. "This man has been wrongfully imprisoned on trumped-up charges for almost five years simply because of his religious beliefs. He was also sentenced in secret, beaten up, and denied access to his family for more than two years at one point. With cases like this, how can China possibly claim to protect religious freedom?"

A convert from Islam, Yimiti was arrested in 2008 for engaging in Christian activities, but was officially sentenced to 15 years on charges of "illegally providing state secrets to foreigners". As a result, the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention declared that Yimiti's arbitrary arrest was a violation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
